I was diagnosed with breast cancer in September 2008 and all my treatment took place at Castle Hill Hospital in Cottingham, Hull.
First I needed a lumpectomy and my surgeon gave me a date only a week away. I couldn't have been seen quicker had I gone private as they needed time to do a pre-operation check-up. I hadn't been in hospital since I was a child in 1956 so wasn't looking forward to going in, however I had a wonderful experience.
The hospital was spotless and the staff were excellent. Every staff member introduced themselves and couldn't do enough to help. I recovered very quickly and didn't need any care during the night, but those who did were seen to straight away. My only 'complaint' was, the evening meal was quite poor. I am a vegan and would have been happy with the potatoes and vegetables but they ran out and I got a tiny bit of salad.
After the operation I was given chemotherapy and radiotherapy and again, the staff couldn't have been more helpful. They spent time with me explaining all the procedures and had time to answer any questions that I might have. There is even a patient room staffed by qualified cancer nurses where they provide free drinks and biscuits and someone to chat to. The only downside was the length of time I had to wait for my chemotherapy, but it gave me a chance to catch up with my reading.
We are very lucky in the Hull area to have such an excellent hospital.
