"Fibromyalgia Diagnosis"

About: Bristol, North Somerset, Somerset and South Gloucestershire Frenchay Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics Southmead Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

When I was a five year old, I complained that my bones were hurting. My mother took me to the GP who said it was 'growing pains'. When I was eight I developed red scaley patches all over my body but especially on my joints. The GP correctly diagnosed psoriasis and explained that the joint pains I was still experiencing was probably psoriatic arthritis. I spent the rest of my life applying creams and lotions and taking anti-inflammatory drugs.

Recently my GP suggested I see a consultant about the various forms of arthritis I had been told could be the reason for the pain I suffered. After blood tests, x-rays, and extensive examinations, the consultant told me that although I had symptoms of both osteo and rheumatoid arthritis, I definitely did not have psoraitic arthritis. He went through all my symptoms again and diagnosed Fibromyalgia.

When he gave me information on the condition and the symptoms, it was exactly what I had been suffering for all those years. He went through all the latest treatments and arranged for me to have physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, and wrote to my GP suggesting the regime of medication I should start immediately.

I went to see my GP shortly after and my doctor said "Oh, it's just one of those made up diseases". I asked him to give me the treatment that the consultant had suggested, and I intend to change my GP practice shortly.

Dear Bridie54 - I am pleased that the consultant at North Bristol NHS Trust was able to assist in confirming a diagnosis and I hope that this will assist in helping you manage your condition.

I hope that you are able to engage the support you require outside of the acute setting and wish you well for the future.
