"Very well looked after but left with concerns"

About: Southmead Hospital

I was in as a day surgery case. Reported at 11 but finally had my operation at 5pm I was very anxious by the time I went to theatre because nerves had grown, so many others were sent home as no beds and I was last on the list. On the good side I had excellent care from all the staff, from the trainee nurse to the consultant. Very professional. I would recommend taking some food in for after an operation. I had not eaten for 18 hours and was light headed after initial recovery. After my operation they had nothing left to give me so a kind nurse made me bread and jam, so at least I had some energy the face the car ride home. I was given one cup of tea but no water jug or glass was in my room, so left feeling very thirsty. Also, I do not like the airport terminal style of the hospital. Very off putting and impersonal. But liked having my own room. If I was in any longer a TV would be a good idea. The hospital does have free wifi so you could watch TV on your computer. But I am sure many people do not do this due to being old or too ill. The wifi for me did not work on my phone though. The car parking is a nightmare and a long walk to get to car was not good. No provision for easy pick up.

Dear Anonymous – thank you for your comments. I was pleased to learn that your surgery was able to proceed and that you received good care. It is regrettable that someone has to be last on the list and we are considering introducing several different admission times to try and improve patients’ experience and wait times without food and refreshments. Clearly food and drinks should be offered to all patients, subject to any clinical restrictions, and I apologise this was not your experience. I am sorry that you experienced problems accessing the Wi-Fi, please be assured we are looking at ways that tablet computers can be made available for those patients who do not have their own devices. Parking is unfortunately restricted until the new multi-story car park, which will link to the Brunel building for easy access, is available next year once the old hospital building on the site have been demolished to make way for this. I hope that you are now feeling much better. Your comments will be shared with the staff concerned. Kind Regards – Steve Sykes Advice and Complaints Team
