My daughter has had depression for 2 and a half years. This year after the initial 6 weeks of therapy, she was told to re-refer herself, this she did but had to go back on the long waiting list. She was getting better but needed more therapy. She dearly wanted this to work but, when she had her interview, which was 30 minutes long, they deemed it was not necessary to have further therapy ( as she wasn't suicidal). They advised to seek counselling, but again another long wait, plus £30 to £40 pounds towards it. I think the service should be free and until the patient is free from symptoms, rather then just the standard 6 weeks (which seems to me a tick a box service).
My daughter is still depressed and takes anti-depressants (it seems the attitude is to see this as the easiest and most cost effective way to treat patients). I have heard from other young people waiting for counselling/other talking therapies and not getting this in time or just giving up and resorting to street drugs. What a waste of young lives, yet everyone I think is looking at performance measured by how many tick boxes they generate rather then the quality of service they provide.
I am deeply disappointed, when I tried to help they replied that they would rather talk to her, this is not feasible as she has ups and downs and really cannot tolerate inconsistencies of the service and gets irritated and gives up. I feel that there is no sympathy with the emotions that a depressed younger person goes through, and how easy it is to give up and so anyone trying to help should be encouraged. In summary my daughter has not had counselling, so as the previous correspondent reports the case is closed, and they are happy to tick their boxes. My daughter is still on anti-depressants and I feel I'm struggling on my own, the service is inadequate, perhaps it is short of funds but it is not delivering what it should.
