"TRAQS didn't know waiting times for alternative hospitals"

About: Telford referral and quality service (TRAQS)

(as the patient),

I was referred for an appointment for gastroenterology. TRAQS called to say the wait to see someone at Princess Royal Hospital Telford would be 18 weeks. I was told I could go to three other hospitals instead but they didn’t know the waiting times for them to see me. How can a patient make an informed decision without this information? I rang one hospital myself and they told me I would be seen in 12 weeks. If I can do this why couldn’t the TRAQS team?

In my opinion doctors should make their referrals direct to the local hospital most people choose it anyway.

Thank you for responding with feedback.

Unfortunately Gastroenterology is a speciality which TRAQS are unable to offer an appointment for locally. Most of the hospitals run an assessment service for Gastroenterology. This means that the consultant will review your referral and arrange either an outpatient appointment or tests depending upon clinical need. The waiting time can vary depending upon what decision the consultant makes but this is outstide TRAQS control and we are not able to give a clearer indication of the waiting times at individual hospitals as the clinicians will decide on the waiting time. for each individual referral once they have reviewed the clinical information from the referring GP.

I am sure you can appreciate that as each referral is dealt with on a clinical basis this is outside TRAQS control.

Thank you again for taking the time to share your comments with the TRAQS team.
