"Young carers experience "

About: Balfour Hospital / General Surgery

(as a volunteer/advocate),

A carer from Orkney told us: -

I’m a young carer. They were ok with me but a bit rushed. They didn’t take my opinion seriously. They did look after my mum but didn’t speak to me and I'm the main carer. I was very worried.

Dear Kar

Thank you for letting us know about your experience in the hospital with your mum.

I am very sorry to hear that you were left feeling you had not been included in conversations and decisions about your mum and do appreciate that this was a very worrying time for you. I was pleased to note that you felt your mum had been cared for well.

Without more details, I am unable to fully answer your concerns however I would very much like to hear from you so that we can understand what we could have done better and where we need to make improvements.

If ou feel you are able to discuss this further, my contact details are:

email: julietait@nhs.net telephone: 01856 888221

Please feel free to ask someone to help you or come with you if you would like some support.

Your experience of our services could very much help us make sure we recognise the needs of young carers in future.

I hope you feel able to contact me and again, I am sorry for any distress caused.

Julie Tait

Patient Experience Officer
