My partner was diagnosed in March with a degenerative brain condition which has had an adverse effect on his speech and communication. This has been the most noticeable problem and definately the most frustrating as he has always been a gregarious, friendly character.
There is no treatment available but he has had monthly visits from the speech and language therapist in Nottingham, Margaret Metcalfe. She has been very helpful as it has helped us to understand the problem more and has give us strategies and help to improve communication. This has involved the use of words as prompts, advice on the condition as well as helping to improve his speech by creating a calm environment and recognising the causes of his anxiety / frustration.
Aside from all this it has been good to have someone from the NHS involved in his care as he does not have regular hospital / GP appointments for the condition
"Corticobasal degeneration"
