In September 2004, I was rushed to Kingston Hospital and diagnosed as having suffered a mini-stroke (Transient Ischaemic Attack - TIA).
Ambulance and AE staff were fantastic. I was admitted for observation and a CT scan (which never happened). I was told to continue taking aspirin, and was also prescribed Clopidogrel (Plavix), which I understand were not collectively licenced for the purpose. After a short stay I was discharged and saw my GP, who immediately took me off the Plavix.
Over the next few days, I felt unwell, and had two further emergency trips to A&E. Eventually, I was diagnosed with a haemorrhagic (bleeding) stroke.
I understand that the NHS has to prioritise, but feel that stroke patients often don't receive the treatment they need. I think all hospitals should be required to meet appropriate national standards for stroke patients.
