"Some of the staff should pay more attention"

About: East Surrey Hospital / Gastroenterology East Surrey Hospital / General surgery

(as the patient),

When I attended this clinic last August the doctor’s pen did not work so I gave him one of mine. It had a little saying on it about the power of prayer and seeing this the doctor said if I had no faith in him I should go somewhere else.

During the appointment I asked him how he had missed that I was de-hydrated, he said he did not know anything about any blood tests even though he had taken my blood. He took the blood himself because the person with him was not qualified.

I went through all of my symptoms after which he said I must be feeling pretty grotty and then I was sent home.

At 2. 00am I had a call from the hospital asking how I was feeling! Because of the blood test results they said I should go to the hospital straight away – my son and daughter took me to East Surrey hospital, they did not send an ambulance. I was eventually admitted for 4 days, given lots of pills, blood transfusions and steroids. If they had looked at my notes they would have seen that steroids do not agree with me, as a result I was out of action from August to April. It took me that long to recover.

Dear 'Tray94'

I'm sorry to read about your experience - from what you've described it sounds a little unusual in terms of the remarks made and the processes taken. I am sorry you have been poorly for such a long time - especially as you were treated with drugs that don't agree with you. Without knowing your details I can't offer an explanation, but I do know that if you enter the hospital as an emergency patient, then we might not be able to access your notes. Would you like us to look into this further to check that your care plan was handled properly? If you would like to speak to a Matron, please contact me with you name and DOB at eloise.clarke@sash.nhs.uk.

Many thanks for taking the time to leave a comment - we do appreciate your feedback and I hope we can resolve some of these issues with you. Or you might prefer to contact our Patient Advice and Liaison service (PALs) on Telephone 01737 231958 / 01293 600399, Email:pals@sash.nhs.uk or write to: PALS at East Surrey Hospital, Canada Avenue, Redhill, Surrey, RH1 5RH.

Many thanks,

Eloise,

Head of Communications.
