"Where was the compassion and empathy?"

(as a relative),

As a health care professional I was appalled and disappointed when visiting a relative in Admission Unit 2 at the Victoria hospital, Kirkcaldy. Sitting in the four bedded bay to overhear a doctor tell another patient she was dying and the only option was palliative care. No curtains were drawn for privacy. This was done in front of the other patients. I felt this was disrespectful to the patient and their family. I don't supposed this doctor would have been pleased if this was a member of his family. Where was the compassion and empathy?

Dear "Anonfy"

Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your recent experience when visiting your relative, which I was deeply saddened to read.

As a health professional you will be very aware of the real challenges in maintaining privacy and dignity in busy Units; however the situation you describe is not acceptable.

What you describe does not promote a person centred approach to care and I will make sure that I share your comments with the staff in the Unit and with our Senior Medical staff to remind them of the importance of offering privacy when delivering information like this.
