Why is it presumed that men are happy to have the genitals exposed to one and all.

In America there are such things as colonoscopy shorts, for internal examination or for colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy. These have a hole at the back. Here in the UK they want a patient naked except for a hospital gown, or for examination to simply have their trousers and pants round their knees.

To conduct an examination or colonoscopy/sigmoidoscopy the doctor or endoscopist needs access to the anus and not to the genitals. A pair of boxer shorts worn back to front or for men an athletic support (jockstrap) would protect their modesty and make them feel more comfortable.

As yet I've only been examined, I think I'll be refusing the next test.

Your comments have highlighted an important issue that dignity shorts are not routinely offered to patients being examined in our outpatient clinics, even though we routinely offer them to patients attending for colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy. We apologise that this compromised your experience with us and would like to assure you that we are currently taking action to resolve this. In the first instance, your feedback was forwarded immediately to the Associate Director of Nursing and Matron for Outpatients and we are now investigating the provision of dignity shorts to be available in relevant outpatient clinics.

We hope that we have managed to settle your concerns about attending for further treatment or tests. If you have other queries, or would like to suggest other ways that we can improve patient’s experience, please do not hesitate to contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS).
