"Appointment delay at the Manchester Eye Hospital"

About: Manchester Royal Eye Hospital / Ophthalmology

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

This story has been posted by Healthwatch Tameside on behalf of a member of the public. We have their details and will forward any comments to them. They said:

"I have had treatment at Manchester Eye Hospital for several years. Following laser treatment to both eyes I had bleeding (Posterior Vitreous Detachment). I lost three quarters of the sight in my right eye. The eye hospital were aware of this, and agreed that it was bleeding caused by P. V. D.

I went to the opticians to get new glasses on in late March 2014 and the optician made me an emergency appointment for that afternoon as she was worried that my retina was detaching. I was seen at the Eye Hospital that afternoon and the consultant agreed that it was a stable detachment. He said that he would make me an appointment to be seen in two weeks. By mid June I had heard nothing at all from the Eye Hospital. That’s 13 weeks.

Also when they do send letters they are not in large print and are hard to read."

Firstly, we must apologise for the length of time it has taken to respond to the comments you posted in June 2014.

We are sorry to hear your comments relating to the failure of the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital to follow up on your appointment in March and the concern you raised regarding the size of the font in our letters. The Manchester Royal Eye Hospital is able to offer letters in larger font so please contact the us (or ask for this at your next appointment) so we can arrange for your letters to be sent in this way.

It is very difficult to respond to the specific concerns you have raised relating to your follow up appointment without knowing which consultant you are waiting to see and for which clinic. It would therefore be helpful if you could contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service on 0161 276 8686 or by e-mailing pals@cmft.nhs.uk and they will be happy to take your details and pass these on to the management team of the outpatients department who can help to address your concerns in more detail. We take all issues surrounding patient care very seriously and would very much like to hear from you directly about this.
