"Relatively short waiting times ..."

About: Darlington Memorial Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

Relatively short waiting times in A&E. Was treated with respect in A&E and couldnot fault the assessment I received whilst in their care.

Ward very clean.

Good level of nursing care during the Day shift.

What could be improved

Things started to go wrong when I was transferred to the ENT ward.I was seen by a Dr promptly who said he would sort out pain relief and IV antibiotics.I was assigned a bed but had to ask on several occasions for some pain relief.I eventually got my medication 2 and a half hrs after being assessed-Th Dr had apparently not written up the drugs before leaving the ward, which meant that I was unable to drink during this time because of pain.Soon after the staff nurse had given me my medication a porter arrived to move me to ward 33- nobody had mentioned a transfer to another ward.

I found the care on ward 33 during the night to be absolutely appalling. The ward was clearly short staffed with many nurses complaining about working overtime.Every patient in this bay was complaining about the care. The lights in the bay didnt go out until 12.00 and we were woken up with the main lights being switched on at 5.50am! I did not sleep at all because of an elderly patient crying out in pain all night .The nurse call button was largely ignored or a health care assistant would switch it off and then disappear. One of the ladies in the bay sat up with this lady trying to comfort her half the night.I work for this trust and I must say I fear for any elderly patient who is treated on this ward. There was no care or compassion evident during the night shift.
