"Colonoscopy - what its like and the pros and cons of sedation."

About: Musgrove Park Hospital / Gastroenterology

(as the patient),

Three years ago I had a colonoscopy and wanted to be aware of what was going on but was knocked out with sedation and painkillers and missed the whole process.

Therefore when I had my second cololoscopy yesterday, with a different consultant, I asked for no sedation unless it was vital to complete the procedure and also opted to try it without painkillers. I could of course change my mind at any point and all through the process I was asked if I was OK, which thankfully I was. It was not completeley pain free but no worse than period pains. It was a fascinating experience to see my own insides on the screen and I was able to ask questions as we went along. After a drink and a biscuit I was able to go home.

In my experience the worse things about colonoscopies is the Phosopho-soda bowel cleansing before and the wind pains afterwards.
