"My incredible peer support worker"

About: Beacon Services

(as a service user),

I met Kerry during my 7th pregnancy. I'd had 4 early miscarriages, then gave birth to my beautiful daughter. In-between the current pregnancy and my daughter I lost a baby at 17+3 due to maternal vascular malperfusion. Pregnancy was already a battle of anxiety, guilt, upset etc since the earlier battles. Now I had a diagnosis this current pregnancy was filled with the emotions as well as all of the medical appointments with specialist consultants, injections, medications, infusions etc. Kerry was the light at the end of the tunnel. I had looked for support in previous pregnancies and was passed pillar to post between adult services and pregnancy services and never actually received anything. Kerry has not only supported me through this pregnancy and helped me build self compassion; before my sign off she has ensured I am now receiving PTSD therapy to help process all the trauma and loss.

Kerry has been in my corner from the start. She was so easy to talk to and I felt early on I could be vulnerable and trust her fully with my past, present and future. This service made this most recent pregnancy a much easier ride as I felt supported. From conversations, convenient meet ups, letter writing to trauma birth plan creating and referrals for further support I cannot thank Kerry enough for all of the support and time she has given me.

I work within Beacon MMHS providing psychological leadership within the service. I am involved in offering individualised psychological interventions to individuals experiencing moderate- severe mental health difficulties arising from perinatal loss, trauma and tokophobia (severe fear of childbirth). I am also involved in staff training within mental health services, maternity services and local university courses.
