"Pancreatitis"

About: Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary / General Surgery

(as the patient),

I was admitted to DGRI B3 due to abdominal pains, nausea, vomiting and generally unwell. Was given pain relief and anti-sickness, which helped. I was doubled up without being informed of it, or even asked,  this didn't help how I was feeling or how my mental health was.

I was fasted to go for MRCP, didn't happen, then fasted a 2nd day and didn't happen again, was fasted a 3rd day and not taken for MRCP, only to find out it hadn't been requested nor had the ultrasound. Eventually was requested after 4 days, had to fast again to get the MRCP.

Whilst in B3 I was prescribed fluids for pancreatitis and I also had jaundice, and Gallbladder issues, when they run out took hours to get more up, had to keep asking staff, had no vital signs done in a very long period even though I was on fluids with pancreatitis, nausea and jaundice. Had to continuously ask for pain relief before being given it.

Some nurses didn't listen to my concerns over sleeping, took days to get a nurse to listen to my concerns over my care and sleeping due to undiagnosed PTSD while in the double up. The double up criteria should take into consideration that a patient is unwell on fluids, being sick and their mental health, I understand the need to double up due to hospital pressures, patient should be asedk and consulted first, be given the right to agree.

The healthcare support workers are amazing, would do anything to help explained things that was going on, took the time to speak to patients, they were a lot more helpful with getting information about my care than the nurses, I believe that the healthcares are under valued

Dear travellerpg73,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback and experience with us.

I was sorry to learn of your experience in Ward B3 at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary, and would like to take this opportunity to apologise to you for the upset that this experience has caused.

I note your concerns and the distress caused by the cancellations for your MRCP scans, the delays in medication and the treatment thereafter. I also note your concerns and the upset about feeling that staff did not listen to you regarding your difficulties with sleep, or having to share a room. This certainly does not reflect the standard of care or level of service we strive to provide.

I was pleased however to hear you describe our health care support workers as amazing and I am glad that they were able to speak with you and provide information and support.

Understanding our patient's experiences is crucial for us to continually learn how we can improve our services and provide effective support.

We are keen to investigate your concerns further so that we can better understand what happened and identify any learning and support. I would be grateful if you could please reach out to the patient experience team if you feel comfortable doing so. That would allow us to look into this further and ensure that we can provide you with any additional support as appropriate.

Our team can be reached by email at dg.patientservices@nhs.scot or by telephone on 01387 272733. If you do not feel able to contact us directly, or if you feel that you would benefit from extra assistance providing feedback, you can receive free, independent advice and support from the Patient Advice and Support Service (PASS). More information on their service can be found at https://pass-scotland.org.uk/.

Thank you again for taking the time to share your feedback with and I hope that you feel able to reach out to our team so that we can support you further.

Kind regards

Sara
