"Early morning visit to department"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Same Day Admissions Unit

(as the patient),

Had been referred from RAH Out of Hours dept.  For potential kidney stones in my left kidney which cause me severe discomfort and panic as this is the 2nd time I have had them within a 15 year time window

Arrived into department roughly 7am and was asked to take a seat. Very shortly after I was taken in by Nurse John, who done my bloods and blood pressure.

Was made aware would have to wait for a couple hours due to it being the start of shift and meetings had to take place,  was grateful to be made aware of this  and thankfully Nurse John gave me something to help with the discomfort while waiting.

Around 9am ish I was taken through to another part of the dept. By an ANP  (sorry can't remember your name) and began the assessment part of my visit  the ANP was very professional and knew her stuff which for me helped as I was still panicking internally and it made all the difference

Was then taken to another waiting area and once again was made aware that the doctor wouldn't be by until 11am again appreciate not being kept in dark.

During this point I went to toilet and passed the kidney stone which gave me relief

I mentioned to staff that I had passed it and was feeling much better however they told me I had to wait for the doctor which is fair enough as I was not thinking of the aftermath side of passing a stone

Doctor took me at 10:45 (earlier than what I was told) and we had a quick chat which doc was happy to discharge

My thanks to all the team involved you provided a great service to me which again made my experience more comfortable  special thanks to Nurse John the ANP and the doctor (again apologies for not remembering your names)

Dear outflowpk85

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your detailed feedback about your recent visit following referral from the RAH Out of Hours service. We understand how painful and anxiety-provoking kidney stones can be, particularly when you have experienced them before, and we appreciate you describing your experience so clearly.

We are pleased to hear that you were seen promptly on arrival and that Nurse John supported you with assessments, clear explanations and pain relief while you were waiting. Keeping patients informed about waiting times and what to expect is very important to us, so it is reassuring to know that you felt kept aware throughout your visit. Your kind comments about the Advanced Nurse Practitioner’s professionalism and reassurance during your assessment are also greatly appreciated, especially as you were feeling understandably anxious at the time.

We are glad that you experienced relief after passing the stone and that the medical review took place sooner than expected, allowing for a safe discharge once everything had been checked. Your understanding of the need to wait for clinical review, even when feeling better, is also appreciated.

We will ensure your thanks are passed on to Nurse John, the ANP and the medical team involved. Feedback like yours is extremely valuable and helps to recognise the hard work of staff who strive to make what can be a very uncomfortable experience as manageable as possible. Thank you again for sharing your experience.

Kind regards

Kevin
