"Made a potentially stressful situation as relaxed as possible"

About: Vale of Leven General Hospital / Xrays and Scans (Radiology)

(as a relative),

I took my mother-in-law for an appointment at the X-Ray Dept, Vale of Leven Hospital, Alexandria. She has Alzheimer's disease and was unsure what the appointment was for. The admin officer at Reception advised she was attending for a CT scan and gave us directions to the correct area. A member of the Radiography Dept greeted her and supported her through getting ready for the scan. The radiographer then guided her through the procedure. All staff treated her with the greatest courtesy and respect, making a potentially stressful situation as relaxed as possible.

When I enquired who the scan had been requested by, I was given the Consultant's name and place of work, so that I could contact him for further information.

Having such comprehensive scanning facilities in the local area is extremely important, reducing the stress of travelling to an unfamiliar hospital, when a relative has dementia.

Dear Mathilda May

Thank you very much for taking the time to share such detailed and thoughtful feedback about your mother-in-law’s recent visit to the X-Ray Department at Vale of Leven Hospital. We are delighted to hear that staff across Reception and the Radiography Department treated her with such courtesy, patience and respect, and that they took the time to explain each step and support her throughout the appointment.

We understand how challenging and stressful hospital visits can be for people living with Alzheimer’s disease and their families, and it is reassuring to know that the team helped make the experience as calm and comfortable as possible. We are also pleased that you were given clear information to help you follow up with the requesting consultant.

Your comments about the importance of having comprehensive scanning facilities locally are greatly appreciated, and we recognise the significant difference this can make in reducing anxiety and unnecessary travel for patients with dementia. We will ensure your kind feedback is shared with the teams involved, who will be encouraged to hear how positively their care was received. Thank you again for letting us know about your experience.

Kind regards

Kevin
