"Supporting an adolescent who had started self medicating with alcohol"

About: Staffordshire Treatment and Recovery Service - STARS / Young People (T3)

(as a parent/guardian),

He was drinking large quantities alone & in secret to a dangerous level. This was after we had tried to access help for his mental health which was impacted by his neurodiversity, but no support or understanding of that had been evident from some professionals, purely because his behaviour at school was unconcerning.

They dont seem to understand the reality and exhausting impact on young people who are masking at school because they realise they are different. I felt embarassed that we hadn't realised he was drinking and that he felt he needed it. I felt worried for him and his future.

When he was thought to be ready for discharge, there was another episode and the contact was immediately re-established. The professional showed a great deal of understanding, initiative and compassion regarding the situation, really giving of herself. Despite the seriousness of our concerns she made her support accessible, enjoyable and kind.

The difference it has made is significant. Thank you

Hi Relrj84

I am Liz the T3 manager I would like to thank you for taking the time to send the feedback around the interventions and support received by your son, we greatly appreciate feedback that allows us to continue to improve the services we offer young people. I will share the feedback with the team as this validates the positive work they deliver also.

I am pleased to know the worker showed compassion, was flexible in the support offered and showed kindness and understanding to you and your son at a time when you were experiencing some lack of understanding around his neurodiversity needs.

Your son needs to be congratulated on his engagement and commitment in attending sessions and for his honesty that has allowed him to achieve his goals so please pass on how proud he should be of himself.

I would like to wish you all happiness for the future and for your son success in everything he may choose to do in the future.
