"empowered to feel part of the process"

About: Downe Community Services / Children and Young People’s Speech and Language Therapy Service

(as a service user),

My teenage son attended for a period of speech and language therapy, as he had developed a stutter.

This stutter was greatly impacting his life, causing him to withdraw and not participate socially, at school and within family discussions.

From the moment that I contacted the speech and language therapy department, on his behalf, the team supported our whole family.

Initially, by taking an in depth case history from me, taking real time and care to hear about our concerns . Then by assessing our son and by establishing his/our goals for therapy.

Our son was given a voice, time, energy and expertise by the speech and language therapist.

Having attended for a number of sessions, been given advice, help, teaching and techniques to apply, our son has been put on review. He has made such great progress that he does not need to attend for regular therapy. He has been empowered to feel very much part of this process, from beginning to end.

Many thanks to the very kind, skilled speech and language therapist involved.
