In August last year I had a minor stroke. It affected my face, speech and my right side, in particular my arm and hand. It was a scary time and a shock to wake up unable to speak. It all feels a bit surreal now.
My partner called an ambulance and they came very quickly. Two lovely paramedics hooked me up and very quickly decided I needed to go to hospital. By this time my speech was recovering somewhat and i could communicate a little. The ambulance staff were amazing.
At WRH they were ready for me and I was very quickly seen and given blood thinning medication and a CT scan. The hospital staff were also amazing. I was discharged later the same day but i felt worse over night and so was re-admitted spending a night in hospital before going home the next day to await a MRI scan.
Soon after I got home I was given an appointment to see the Community Stroke Team at The Princess of Wales. I didn't know what to expect but what lovely people! (Louise and Lucy and, I think, a student called Emily?)
I felt so supported and really listened to. I was given a lot of information to take home and signed up for 'Living Well After Stroke' teams meetings which were very useful.
My main concerns at the time were the impact on my singing and playing of musical instruments. The team arranged home visits from OTs and speech therapists which really helped and I'm pleased to say that I'm doing well in both areas thanks to a lot of help from Jessica amongst others.
I cannot praise the staff of the Community Stroke Team enough - such a brilliant service.
My GP was also supportive although I did have to photocopy my discharge details from WRH as he wasn't sent them. He was also not happy with the information contained in them. I was also told, at WRH, that I would be called for an out patients appointment which hasn't happened yet nearly 5 months later - this is the only possible complaint I could have though it seems churlish as every one of the NHS staff and every service did what was needed in a timely way to keep me well.
