"Loss of the art of caring"

About: Outpatients Department / Clinic 6 - Ophthalmology

(as a service user),

I attended the diabetic eye clinic with my relative.

I visited the bathroom first. The bathroom was dirty. No soap in dispenser, paper towels on floor an appearance of grubbiness.

As always the clinic was busy. No one said sorry we are running behind. That isn't a problem but you are sat there like a lemon wondering have you been forgotten.

Some of the nursing staff did not wash their hands. Some staff I felt their attitude was one of cold indifference, another cog in the wheel. No small talk. No my name is. A staff member's hair was hanging over me during the procedure. Gel nail polish was evident but no aprons were evident. I felt they were very rough in the way they 'manhandled' the sensitive area around the eye. Horrible experience.

My relative has been many times and said some staff are better than others. No one wants to have their eye injected and for staff it must be repetitive and boring. My relative was very upset and is worried about infection that would lead to further deterioration in their sight. Unfortunately there is no option for my relative but to attend this clinic again with trepidation. I feel nurses are supposed to be better trained. Technically yes but some appear to have lost the art of caring.

Hello

My name is Donna, I am the deputy sister within Antrim Outpatients department. I am very sorry for your experience, would you mind confirming where you attended for this clinic as within Antrim we do not carry out a diabetic eye clinic. If you could provide this information I can escalate this to the appropriate department for further investigation.

Wishing you well Donna
