"Exceptional Care During a Frightening Emergency"

In the early hours of a late December day, I experienced a medical emergency which turned out to be a perforated ulcer. I had vomited blood and lost consciousness. My wife phoned 999, and within a short time a Medical Technician arrived. Her calm, reassuring manner immediately eased my anxiety and gave me confidence that I was in safe hands.

When the ambulance crews arrived, they continued that same high standard of care. I was transported comfortably to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, and although we had to wait before being admitted to A&E, the ambulance staff kept me warm, reassured, and as comfortable as possible.

There was only one moment during my entire experience where the standard of care dipped. Because the first ambulance crew were going off shift, I was transferred to another ambulance. I was wheeled across the car park in freezing early morning temperatures wearing only pyjamas and without any covering. By the time I reached the second ambulance, I was shaking with cold. This was the only point where I felt the care fell below acceptable levels.

However, the second ambulance team quickly restored my spirits, and from that moment onward, every part of my journey through ARI was outstanding. I was admitted to A&E, cared for in the corridor with professionalism and kindness, and then moved into the A&E ward where the doctor clearly explained the plan for my treatment. This communication made a frightening situation far more manageable.

I was then transferred to Ward 106B, where every member of staff worked together seamlessly. Doctors and consultants from different specialties took the time to explain my treatment plan, which gave me real confidence. Over the next few days, I received a blood transfusion, an operation, and fluid drips. At every stage, I was kept informed and treated with exceptional care.

What stood out most was not only the medical treatment, but the human care. Doctors, nurses, and even janitorial staff offered comfort, reassurance, and kindness. Their combined efforts gave me a deep sense of confidence in the ARI care system, and I am certain this contributed significantly to my recovery.

When I was transferred to Ward 104, the atmosphere became lighter and more relaxed — appropriate for the stage of recovery I had reached — and the same high standard of care continued until I was discharged home a few days later.

My medical emergency was one of the most frightening experiences of my life. Yet from the moment NHS Grampian staff took me into their care, everything changed. I encountered professionalism, compassion, and teamwork at every stage. I received far more than medical treatment — I received reassurance, dignity, and genuine human care.

I want to express my heartfelt thanks to everyone involved. These individuals do far more than simply turn up for work. They come together to deliver a level of care that I have never experienced before, and I am deeply grateful.

Hi Aiden@2012,

I know my colleagues from NHS Grampian have responded to your post but I just wanted to pass on my thanks on behalf of the Scottish Ambulance Service for the very kind comments you made about our staff who cared for you.

I'm sorry to read about the delays outside of hospital and the necessity to transfer you whilst waiting due to a change of shift and I'd like to apologise that you were so cold during this transfer and felt the service levels dipped during this time.

I'm pleased though to read that you felt your overall care from both our staff from the ambulance service, and those in NHS Grampian, was of a high standard and they were all so outstanding during what sounds like an incredibly scary experience.
