My 3 and half year old son had a allergic reaction to flour today. He has Atopic Excema and I am aware that he could have an allergy to all sorts, dust, cat dander, and so on. But I would have thought a wheat itollerance would be important.

however I phonned my dermatologist, I was aware that there was a new doctor in. I asked could I get an appointment about getting an allergy test done, as this may help with the excema. I was told as I hadent been in since june or july last year that I would have to go to the doctor and get referred. not only do I feel upset with this remark but I am outraged, my son has has severe excema since three month old, I am aware of almost everything about it, I have not had any appointments since last year as I have a repeat prescription for ease and more to the point they have not sent any mandatory appointments to me at all!

why do we need to go and get referal again once he has been refered?

bare in mind it took my son being in hospital three times for them to notice he needed a dermatologist, and I went to the PTA I think there called that. and they sorted it for us in 1 hour! ! !

why are parents being treated like robots?

why cant there be just some personal consideration?

sorry for being brash just very upset.

Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your and your son’s experience of our services.

As eczema is a long term condition, it is normal for patients to be discharged back into the care of their GP following specialist treatment from a dermatologist.

GPs are appropriately qualified to give treatment and advice about eczema, and any concerns about possible allergies can be discussed with a GP. If a GP thinks his/her patients needs to be seen by a specialist, he/she can make a referral to the Dermatology Department.

There are a number of reasons why patients may be discharged back to their GP’s care:

If the dermatologist treating a patient is satisfied at that the condition is being managed well, he/she may discharge the patient back to their GPs care.

If a patient is given follow up appointments but does not attend two consecutive appointments, they will be discharged back to their GP.

If a patient has recently changed address but has not informed us of this change in details, they may not receive the letters about follow up appointments.

If a patient is given an open appointment but does not book it within the booking period, they will be discharged back to their GP. An open appointment gives patients the freedom to book an appointment at a convenient time with a six month booking period. However, if the appointment has not been booked and there has been no contact from the patient by the end of the booking period, patients are discharged back to their GP.

thank you for your reply. I still think this is discusting as 6 months is just not long enough. I think a 6 month and a last check up to confirm with the parent that they are being put back to the GP should be the way to go. fortunately I rang the dermatologist back and she was happy to see me the following friday. she has explained the allergy and the excema great so I no longer want an allergy test and dont feel it necassary at this stage.

but I felt like I was being pushed away, and being given a time limit that I wasnt aware of isnt nice. so I hope that from this maybe someone can put it forward to make a slight change, and the parent and patient can be seen and the end of 6 months to assess the patient and ask the parent if they feel ok with going back to the gp.

and a foot note for your self here...I meet many many doctors in the 3 and half years of my sons life, many of which over 5 in one doctors office that didnt no much about excema, and I got an apology on here about that. but this is not to prove you wrong its just to inform you that not all gps know that the child should be referered.:-)
