"Incredible care for my son, and for me"

About: Darlington Memorial Hospital / Paediatrics

(as a parent/guardian),

My 17-year-old son has been suffering with severe eczema, and on recently his condition became so bad that I had to take him to A&E. The reception nurses immediately recognised the urgency and directed us straight to the paediatric department, as A&E was overwhelmed at the time.

The moment we arrived, we were taken into an assessment room and cared for by Becks and the rest of the fantastic team. He was then moved into a treatment room, and while we waited for the consultant, he received outstanding care and support. After being assessed, he was transferred to Ward 21. As no orderly was available at the time, two of the nurses personally wheeled him up themselves.

When we arrived on Ward 21, my son was instantly treated with such care and compassion that, for the first time, he looked like he was finally being properly looked after. The nurses managed his pain and discomfort throughout the night, ensuring he felt safe and supported.

On Tuesday, medical photography was taken and sent to Durham Dermatology for review. While we waited for a diagnosis and treatment plan, the nurses continued to manage my son’s pain around the clock. Despite the ward being busy, they gave him so much attention and care.

By Wednesday, a treatment plan was in place, and by Thursday we began to see real improvement. A major part of his recovery involved regular application of cream across his whole body, something the nurses handled with such dignity, care, and reassurance that he felt completely at ease. By Friday, he was noticeably better, in less pain, and more like himself again.

On Saturday, he was discharged at 5pm. Even though his condition had improved dramatically, the nurses continued to offer him the same level of care, support, and kindness right up until we left. They also prepared a clear and detailed care plan, which made us feel fully confident going home.

I would like to extend my deepest thanks to all the “angels” of Ward 21, especially Racheal, Helen, Elizabeth, and Katie. My son and I still talk about the incredible care he received, as well as the support I was given as a parent during a very frightening time.

These underpaid, overworked, truly extraordinary nurses will always remain in our hearts.
