"Discharge problems"

About: New Cross Hospital / Older people's healthcare

(as a service user),

I get there are bed shortages…however my 89yr mother was “apparently “ fit for discharge. This started the day after admission when she was really poorly. Now yes she was a lot better but went into hospital mobilising with a zimmer frame, now has to be moved via a rotunda. Physio apparently have “discharged her” Fine, this is ok until you are going to be discharged home with carers during the day but no help at night. So how does my mother use the toilet when she lives alone…? Also still on oxygen..regular nebulisers needing analgesia regularly.

Options she does not drink / holds until morning ? Then risks a UTI

Or has to have pads put on- Totally degrading to a fully alert lady.

When questioned this had not been thought off.. care on ward excellent.. discharge planning staff I saw were rude uncaring and either not aware of full picture or don’t listen to patients or relatives.

Yes it’s good to get patients home but maybe get the full picture before upsetting both patients and relatives. My mother has now become upset ..feels a liability.

Patients are people with feelings and to preserve their wellbeing dignity should be foremost in care.
