"Disappointing care"

About: Paediatrics / Ward 6

(as a service user),

My daughter was admitted to ward 6 with influenza A, a very scary time for us.

Disappointingly I feel we were let down by the ward staff. I have to start this by saying the nurses we seen in APAU were nothing short of amazing, unfortunately the care did not carry over onto the ward.

On day 1, we did not see a staff member all day. Apart from a student (who was amazing) but I feel it was unfair for student to be left on their own.

We were there for 4 days and the room was (lightly) cleaned once.

We were not offered fresh bedsheets.

However this is not my main issue, at a vulnerable time where I needed reassurance the staff I saw did not come through. When I told them I was so worried about my daughter they said that she has flu and what did I expect.

My daughter barley woke up for 4 days, she would not eat and drink at all. We had family members running the roads to try get her different drinks, I was syringing them into her & she spat them straight back out she couldn’t swallow. Therefore she was on IV fluids.

On the morning round I overheard a senior staff member saying that parents of kids with flu need to take more responsibility pushing fluids. If we wanted to see our children being put through IV fluids and lines then so be it.

I was completely devastated, I felt like I was a bad mum, and I was absolutely trying my best. I asked the next staff member I saw to ask the senior staff member to come speak with me, however they never did.
