"I knew I was in good hands"

About: Antrim Area Hospital / Breast Care Antrim Area Hospital / Surgical Elective Unit Laurel House Chemotherapy Unit / Cancer Services

(as the patient),

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in October 24, had a lumpectomy and radiotherapy in the following March. I had a review appointment with one of the nurses in Laurel House, following radiotherapy. I'm sorry I cannot remember her name but she was amazing.

After the radiotherapy my breast was hard and swollen as time passed it started to feel lumpy, this was scary as I didn't know if there were new lumps of if this was my new norm, following surgery and radiotherapy.

The nurse listened to my concerns, checked my breast and arranged for me to have an appointment at the breast clinic. I didn't want to cause a fuss, but she advised me to go - I had a mammogram, ultrasound and biopsies taken, during these examinations the staff were so kind and supportive explaining every step, I needed this as I was soo nervous thinking I had cancer for a second time, it was bad enough getting it the first time.

Thank God when I received the results it was only a cyst, I was so relieved. I just want to thank the nurse in Laurel House for listening, checking and referring me on, her care, compassion and understanding meant more than words can say.

I also want to thank Mr McFall and his team for looking after me and removing the cancer. When I was diagnosed with cancer all I wanted to know was - When is it being removed? Mr Mcfall explained everything to me prior to my operation in a calm, kind and compassion manner, I knew I was in good hands.

The cancer journey is scary but when you have good people looking after you, doing the best they can for you it makes the journey the best it could be.
