"So kind, encouraging and caring"

About: Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (Wonford) / Maternity

(as the patient),

I wanted to give some positive feedback on the amazing care we recently received whilst having my son at the RD&E maternity unit. Particularly the midwives Lara, Emma and Lorna and student midwife Charlotte who looked after us. They all went above and beyond to advocate for me, and ensure safe delivery of my baby. They created a calming environment, even when we had to go up to labour ward at the end of the day, Lara and Emma made sure to try and continue the calm lighting and atmosphere we had in the birthing centre. Lara and Emma even stayed past the end of their shift to see us through to the arrival of our son, which was greatly appreciated having the continuity of support from throughout the day time.

They were all great at explaining my options and giving me a choice (as well as their opinions if I asked for it) when I was in pain in both early and late stages of labour.

Lorna had looked after me the night before when I was in early stage labour and not progressing but unable to face the long and bumpy 45 minute journey home and then back in, so we were so glad to see her come on shift again and be looking after me for the final stages of the labour rather than having someone we hadn’t met come in at that point.

I remember at one point when the doctors were keen to intervene, Lorna made sure to point out the progression and changes since the doctors had last examined me, which I believe prevented having unnecessary intervention.

Overall these midwives were just so kind, encouraging and caring at a time when I was in a lot of pain, and things weren’t necessarily going to plan.

I am so grateful for the care we received throughout the whole birth and afterwards from the midwives, and also from the wider service including the breast feeding support, the canteen, and all the staff we came into contact with.
