My GP referred me to the Sexual Health clinic in Exeter as she had found a small ulcer at the back entrance to my vagina. I went to her because of pain and a severe urinary tract infection. I was very surprised at the referral to the clinic and rather horrified. I am 75 and had recently started a new relationship. The clinic was full of young girls - I was the oldest by a country mile and I nearly ran away!! I was sure the sore place had nothing to do with STI’s.
Once I was shown in to see the doctor my fears were soothed. I was treated with respect and kindness and a total lack of adverse judgement. The tests taken were very personal but taken with great gentleness and reassurance. I left with medication for my UTI and some antivirals in case I had a positive to any of the tests. 4 or 5 days later I got the result that I was positive for Herpes. I was horrified and mortified.
The doctor talked me through all the ramifications and reassured me that it was very common and manageable and not the end of the world as I definitely thought. I have been wonderfully supported with information and reassurance which now continues with my GP.
I am very grateful that the clinic and all it’s experience was available, and particularly grateful for the kindness and caring treatment received from all the staff - including those on the phones and reception.
"Very grateful tothe clinic and all it’s experience"
