"Found consultant worsened my care"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / Radiography services

(as the patient),

I had a consultant who I found unempathetic, unapproachable and not understanding. This made my experience even worse and I felt like my care would have been better if they were the opposite of each of the characteristics I listed above. A few of the nurses understood me, but there could have been improvements in how the ward is set out, understanding fear and listening to consent. This experience has badly affected me and caused me to have panic attacks and anxiety.

Update posted by Unheardvoices (the patient)

Hello Christine, thank you for reaching out to me, this happened in my ward I do not want to name the ward as I am scared incase this repeats and this affects any further treatment if I need it. Not only did I find out they had treated me wrong but had said I refused treatments and tests when I did not. This has really affected me as I was not treated correctly and quite frankly the opposite way that made my pain worse. Luckily my GP has helped me but I have trauma and I found this experience bad and wish I was treated better.

They did not even explain any of my results from any test or scan. Even when I was crying asking for privacy they stood there watching me and made me feel worse and panic.

Dear Unheardvoices

I work alongside Christine in the Patient Experience Team, and I am replying today as Christine is on leave.

Again, please accept our apologies about your recent experience of care in one of our wards. This is not the standard of care we expect from our services, or want anyone to experience.

We however respect your choice not to disclose the ward, and want to assure you that feedback regarding your experience is valued, and will be shared within the Trust for reflection and learning. I am glad to read that your GP was able to provide support to during this difficult time.

If you feel in future able to contact us to discuss further, please feel free to contact Christine or myself

Our contact details are as follows:

Christine.Armstrong@southerntrust.hscni.net
Mairead.Casey@southerntrust.hscni.net

Kind regards

Mairead
