My husband had to stay in Ward 51 recently due to ongoing investigations. On the morning of 3rd day he was told he could go home. I was on way to visit when he told me. He was discharged with only the new medication which was to be given along with his dosette box medication and no discharge sheet. Seemingly we would get by post. Out 7 days & still no sign of it.
On discharge I asked them to contact Care Package team to reinstate my husband's care & was told it would take too long to do & they were too busy so didn’t do it. Also I asked if I could get wheelchair to take husband to front door & was told they didn’t have any on ward. I would only get one if porter came. The porter asked could husband not walk to car 10 mins walk away & I said no. He is only starting to get strength back in his legs after a lengthy stay in GRI & QEUH where he couldn’t walk for 5 months. No compassion at all.
We only had 2 days' medication left in box. I went to pharmacy to collect new box & was advised they couldn’t release it as they would need to check discharge sheet in case medication change. I totally understand their side of it. A pharmacist from GP surgery called to say all sorted & I was to call pharmacy to check box ready. Next day pm still no prescription at pharmacy. They called GP to chase. Next day pm still no sign of prescription but called GP surgery again to chase but did give me a box as we had no medication left that he needed.
They called me the next day am to say prescription had turned up & I could pick up the extra medication to cover the week. I would like to thank our pharmacy for their patience and help sorting out the problem caused by GRI ward 51 for not providing essential medications for seven days that should have been issued on discharge.
