I am four days postpartum and can honestly look back at my water birth experience fondly and with much gratitude. Although giving birth is an all all-consuming, intense experience, I have never felt so safe, empowered, accomplished and content. I attribute this to the environment at Inverurie Maternity and the midwives.
The midwives respected our birth plan, provided gentle guidance rather than instruction when needed and took great care of me and my husband who was my birth partner. They had set up the labour room magically, with spa lighting, providing a mat and birth ball, filling the pool when I was ready and accomodating our birth playlist.
In making your decision on where to give birth, I'd highly recommend a visit to the Inverurie Maternity unit which welcomed us for a show round prior to our birth. I also recommend looking at statistics on the Birth In Grampian website which displays the risks associated with birthing in midwife led units in comparison to a more medicalised environment.
Jenni, Sophie, the other midwives (your names are foggy due to my birth brain at the time) and the magnificent student midwives, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I will never forget the experience you have given me.
