"Ante and Postnatal Community Care"

About: Arbroath Infirmary / Community Midwifery Unit

(as the patient),

During my pregnancy, I have been looked after by a Tayside community midwife, Lisa. It has been Lisa who I have seen at every antenatal appointment and Lisa who has been responsible for most of my postnatal check ups. To have one midwife get to know me and my baby throughout my pregnancy journey has been excellent. This continuity of care has allowed me to build a positive relationship with a professional who I trust and who understands my specific needs. As a result, I have received an extremely high standard of care and the entire experience has been extremely positive.

At each appointment during the antenatal period, Lisa had clearly been able to access shared medical notes if I had visited triage at Ninewells. This allowed her to have a much fuller picture of what had happened in between appointments and meant that time was not wasted during my antenatal visit retelling her all that had happened. I was really impressed by this and it reassured me that there was a good flow of communication between the key professionals involved in my pregnancy care.

As a first time mum, pregnancy could easily have been an extremely anxiety-ridden time. However, Lisa ensured that my care was completely person-centred, listening to any concerns I had and developing a birth plan which was shaped to my needs and preferences, whilst ensuring I would be kept safe and that I was aware of any risks. This personalised, high quality experience as a result of a skilled community midwife made pregnancy and birth a very positive time for myself and my husband. Thank you.
