I recently underwent a laparoscopic cholecystectomy in the Ulster and wanted to share my experience from when it all kicked off, to getting my surgery, as despite how unpleasant it has been for me health wise, the care has been nothing short of excellent from start to finish.
Firstly Dr O'Toole who saw me on my initial visit to A&E who was simply brilliant & caring and arranged my follow up tests in the General Surgery Hub. I had never heard of this service before and think this an excellent resource for patients. I was seen by nurse Karen, who looked after me throughout my visit and this was where I also met my consultant, Ms McWilliams. Everything was very clear about my diagnosis and the next steps were arranged. I felt her positive and upbeat demeanor made me feel I was in good hands!
Unfortunately, I had to return to A&E twice more, the second time I was admitted into hospital. I cannot remember the names of the countless nurses and doctors who attended to me throughout these further two visits but the care I received again was excellent, especially when you consider the high volume of patients and pressure the staff are under in this department. Also the radiography staff who did my xrays, CT and MRI scans who again, put me at ease.
When admitted I was put onto ward 3D. No issues here at all, nurses were kind and able to answer any queries or concerns I had. I must also mention the HCAs who were fabulous and always cheery. I was there for a couple of nights and then discharged to await surgery.
My surgery was arranged as a day procedure and due to my condition changing was then brought forward to about 10 days after discharge. I attended the pre operative assessment unit and was looked after by Jacinta. A fabulous nurse who made the experience so simple and stress free despite having to return for repeat tests, which I appreciate is all for patient safety.
Finally this brings me to my surgery. I was brought into Ward 8 to prepare for theatre. This whole experience was very calm and not rushed at all. Whilst I myself did not feel nervous, I was aware that other patients did and could hear them being reassured by nurses and trying to alleviate any worries.
I was visited by several members of staff, including one of Ms McWilliams' surgeons who went through the procedure clearly and explained any risks. He also visited me post op in the DPU to confirm all had went to plan, I sadly cannot remember his name. I also met Ms McWilliams and had a quick chat. Again her upbeat attitude made me feel totally at ease. I think this would definitely have a positive impact on any patients who are feeling anxious. I am very thankful to have been under her care.
I then met Cara from the anaesthesia team. This was the only aspect of surgery I had some queries about which once addressed were fine. I have to say when I went down to surgery the 3 anaesthetists were excellent. I was able to have a bit of a chat with them as they walked me through what they were doing and before I knew it I was in recovery where I was looked after by Ajenna and Naomi who assessed my condition and provided any pain relief as required.
I was then taken to DPU by Jessica who looked after me and checked I felt well enough to return home. I have had a couple of previous experiences in the DPU and the care in this department remains as excellent as ever.
I appreciate this story has been very long but I wanted to try and include as much of my experiences as possible and also that it may help anyone else reading who has to attend hospital. This was my first personal experience of A&E and surgery (and also inpatient care outside of maternity) and I cannot say a better word about it. My only regret is not being able to remember all the names of the wonderful, caring staff throughout my visits. Thank you all again.
"The care has been nothing short of excellent"
