"Full replacement hip"

About: Trauma & orthopaedics / Orthopaedic National Treatment Centre Victoria Hospital / Pre-assessment

(as the patient),

Feedback on my personal surgical journey.

Firstly I would like to say that being a resident in the Lothian Health area my first point of contact, having been referred by my GP, was with the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary where I was diagnosed as requiring a Full Replacement Hip. The ERI consultant suggested that I would likely be seen quicker if I could travel to either Fife or Glasgow. This was not a problem for me and, within about a couple of month of being placed, on the list I was contacted by letter from The Fife National Treatment Centre at Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy. I was given a date to attend  pre-assessment. The literature took me through what the pre-assess process was going to be, and had helpful tips on exercises and diet on what I could be doing.

The assessment was thorough I felt very much at ease, as it progressed, with the staff explaining every step of the way. Nikki and her team were excellent.

After the pre-assessment, about six weeks later,  I received a letter confirming a date for the operation. From arriving at admission at 07:00Hrs to being prepped for the op I was guided and informed every step of the way which settled the little bit of nervous anxiety that I had. I think it really helped that the staff were communicating the same information that I had previous;y received in the confirmation letter. Although there was a bit of paperwork procedure to go through I did not feel that it was in any way intrusive.

Post op, I was moved to the recovery area, where I was monitored continuously  for about an hour, and then transferred to a ward where I was monitored further at about 15 minute intervals.

My wife was allowed to join with me when I was on the ward. This helped pass the time until my discharge at around 18:00 Hrs.

Pre discharge I was checked by occupational health and a physiotherapist  demonstrated the methods for mobility and put me through a walking test and navigating steps with my new crutches. All was good and I was discharged with a new medications to take at home. All in, my experience was one of excellent care, communication and caring from a very professional team.

This is not a but; but I think the only gap in the procedural post op communication is that there is little to no mention of the monitoring procedure, the nursing attendance, the porter staff and the X-Ray staff. All of whom had a big input post op.

Dear correspondencery55

My name is Tanya McBain, I am one of the charge nurses within the National Treatment Centre ward.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for this really wonderful feedback for our team. All feedback is very greatly appreciated, as we use this information to review our service and continue to make improvements to strive for the clinical excellence we aim to provide to all our patients.

I am really pleased to read that your process from being seeing in your Lothian health area until you were seen here at the National Treatment Centre was a smooth process for you. It pleases me to read that you found the pre operative literature very helpful. We aim for this literature to provide you with as much information as possible about the lead up to your operation and what you can expect and like you mentioned the exercises and diet that can all be started pre surgery to optimise you for your upcoming surgery.

It is so nice to read that you had a pleasant experience at your pre assessment appointment and I am sure the senior staff from our pre-assessment department will also respond to this lovely feedback.

I am very delighted to read that our staff on you admission were able to help relieve some of that nervous anxiety that you experienced. We know how nerve wracking it can be waiting on your operation so we always try to make you feel as comfortable as possible throughout your whole journey. It is great to read that our staff were also providing you with the same information that you had previously received and that our patients are receiving the same information from start to finish of their journey with us. I do appreciate that there can seem a lot of paperwork when you first arrive to the department but this is all important information we require to know to ensure you have a safe, comfortable journey for your surgery and I am glad to read that you did not find these questions intrusive.

I am delighted to read that your post operative journey went well and that you were able to get home on the same day of your operation. This is all part of our enhanced recovery after surgery programme and the benefits to patients post operative are excellent.

Thank you for the kind feedback that your stay was one of excellent care, communication from a professional team. We here at the national treatment understand that this is your journey and we aim to ensure that all of our patients are kept as informed with every step and decision of their journey from admission to discharge as you are the biggest part of the journey. As a charge nurse I am very pleased that all of our team came across as caring and professional throughout your stay.

I would like to hear about where you feel the gap is in regards to the monitoring procedure post operatively with our nursing attendance, portering staff and x-ray staff, if this is something missing from the pre operative literature. Please feel free to contact me on 01592 648010 and ask for myself/Aileen Mackin fellow charge nurse or our senior Charge Nurse Briony Klos or if you wish you can email me at Tanya.mctaggart@nhs.scot

I will share this truly lovely feedback with all of our team. As we thrive on any feedback given.

On behalf of myself and our team here at the National Treatment Centre I wish you all the best in your post operative journey.

Best wishes

Tanya McBain
