"She has helped me accept my condition and still live life"

About: North Devon District Hospital / Neurology

(as a service user),

I was diagnosed with Functional neurological disorder (FND) when I was around 18.

Before then I was having lots of symptoms that were affecting my life. I was out of school and having daily seizures and many other symptoms. I was scared and we were not sure how to manage my condition or what was going on. My life was put on hold.

I was referred to Ruth. I was very nervous. I have never met a professional who truly understood my condition and treated me with the care I deserved. As soon as I met her I knew she was different. She treated me with such compassion, truly understanding how debilitating FND was.

She taught me skills to improve my symptoms which have changed my life. More importantly I am not afraid of my condition. I understand it and feel safer going out as she helped me make a care plan. She also taught me the importance of accepting the condition even though it’s super hard but how I can still move forward and live life even with FND.

She taught my parents how to support me and my symptoms. They had never had support either, so they felt so heard and felt so happy that we finally had a professional who knew how to help us.

Without Ruth I don’t know how we would be doing now. Thank you so so much.
