"Knowing someone was there for us as a family was what we needed"

About: Community Mental Health Services

(as a parent/guardian),

My son was diagnosed with schizophrenia after a psychotic episode at the age of 19. As parents we had no idea what psychosis was and he was detained in hospital. It was the worst time of our lives and leaving him in Carseview was one of the hardest things we have had to do.

He was supported by Adrian after discharge and Adrian helped us all understand more about my son’s diagnosis. Adrian worked with us for 2 years and helped my son in so many ways. Adrian was there for us when we had questions and helped us to support my son in his recovery. Having someone there for us all was so important at a scary and upsetting time and we appreciated Adrian being there for 2 years. During that time my son has passed his driving test and is now at college and he is keeping well. Knowing someone was there for us as a family was what we needed and we greatly appreciate Adrian’s knowledge and support. Thank you.

Dear kilonq59

My name is Helen Bremner and I am the Clinical Team Manager for the South Angus Community Mental Health Team.

Thank you so much for sharing your family's journey with us. I am incredibly grateful that you took the time to reflect on such a personal and difficult experience. I can only imagine how difficult it must have been to navigate your son's diagnosis and the uncertainty. It is clear you have played a key role in supporting your son's recovery.

I am especially heartened to hear how much Adrian’s support meant to you all. His compassion, knowledge, and commitment to working alongside your family during such a vulnerable time is exactly what the Community Mental Health Team strive for.

Your son’s achievements—passing his driving test, attending college, and staying well—are truly inspiring and are reflective of all the support around him, especially from you as his family.

Thank you again for your kind words. I will make sure Adrian sees your message—it will mean a great deal to him.

Wishing your son and your family continued strength, progress, and hope on this journey.

Take care

Helen
