"Recognition for outstanding care from a staff member"

About: University Hospital Ayr / Respiratory Medicine

(as a service user),

To whom it may concern,

I wanted to share my gratitude for a nurse named William. He was on day shift recently, late November, which was his first day back from annual leave, working on the second floor, Station One, at Ayr Hospital.

My mum, has been in and out of Ayr Hospital recently due to severe asthma and AFib. She was admitted a couple of weeks ago and sent home, but sadly became very unwell again and returned with significant breathing difficulties. She has had an incredibly hard time, and although she is a strong woman, she was really struggling.

All of the nurses and doctors work so hard, but William truly stood out. Despite just returning from annual leave, he was completely on the ball. My mum said it was the best care she had received and that, for the first time, she felt her condition was being taken seriously. He kept her as comfortable as possible, and when her condition began to deteriorate, he was the one advocating for her. She was later transferred to High Dependency, and after seeing her, I feel so relieved she looks like a different woman compared to the day before. The HDU staff have been incredible, and she is receiving the best care.

I brought William a card and a small gift from us to express our appreciation. The genuine look of concern on his face, and the way he immediately asked how my mum was, brought a tear to my eye. He is truly amazing and deserves recognition. I know the NHS doesn’t always receive the positive feedback it deserves, so I wanted to make sure our experience and the impact one exceptional nurse had on my mum was properly acknowledged. We will never forget him & would hope this can be shared with him.

Thank you.
