"Difficulty in getting eye injection appointments"

About: Mater Hospital / Macular Unit

(as a service user),

I have attended the Macular Unit in Mater Hospital for quite a number of years where professionalism, care and attention has been excellent by all members of staff.

Unfortunately the appointment system is very poor and over these past number of years I have lost vision at particular points due to delay of injection, and not being given appointment for injection as per consultant's treatment plan. Consequently I become very stressed and depressed when I can't get my injection slot in a reasonable time frame and spend days on the phone trying to get a cancellation.

As a retired healthcare professional, I understand the issues facing the very busy unit but there are some ways the situation could be improved, eg given next appointment after getting injection as many other macular units do which would also save on postage of letters. But when I get do get my appointment in the Unit the treatment and care is truly excellent and very much appreciated.

Dear Nadia/10,

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your experience with our Macular Unit. We are truly grateful for your kind words about the professionalism and care provided by the team, and we are sorry to hear about the stress and difficulty you have faced in trying to secure timely injection appointments.

We fully appreciate how important it is for patients to receive their treatment within the correct time frame, and we understand how delays can understandably be worrying and frustrating. Please be assured that our macular services are currently in the process of expanding so that we can improve appointment availability, reduce waiting times, and better meet the growing demand for care. This work is ongoing, and we are confident it will make a meaningful difference for our patients.

In the meantime, if you would like to discuss your appointment schedule or if there is anything we can do to support you further, please feel free to contact our Admin Manager directly on 02896154781. We would be very happy to help in any way we can.

Thank you again for your feedback—it is invaluable in helping us improve the service we provide.

Warm regards,

Laura.
