"My relative's care"

About: Kings Cross Health and Community Care Centre / GP Out of Hours

(as a relative),

My relative attended King’s Cross in Dundee  due to pain and a suspected infection following many operations for cancer  and urinary diversion. Following advice from paramedics which were called out, she attended King’s Cross with a surgical scar weeping significant amounts of puss, which had a foul smell. She was also experiencing significant pain.

When she attended King’s Cross, she had kitchen roll over her dressing as the puss had seeped through the dressing. The doctor did not attempt to look at her wound, therefore they did not see the puss, or even the wound itself. If they had looked he would have seen it is most likely infected.

She requested to have her dressing changed, where she was told there were no dressings, therefore she was left with a soaked through dressing. The dressing not being changed may have caused infection or made the suspected infection worse.

I feel that for a patient to be refused a dressing change, especially when soaked though, is neglectful and has a complete disregard for very basic care. Therefore she was not properly assessed, she was only given antibiotics.

As a health professional a doctor should know and have the capacity to check a dressing for infection or even sepsis. In my view, my relative was failed by King’s Cross Dundee and this should be investigated.
