"Anorexia Recovery"

About: Community Mental Health Services / Eating Disorder Service

(as a service user),

For over 20 years, I was caught in the grips of anorexia. I was lost, tired of just surviving and in 2024 I went to my GP after a breakdown at work. I was referred to the outpatient Eating Disorder Unit and was triaged after 6 months. I felt stuck and in limbo until I saw Emma the dietician. Emma taught me how to eat again, how to feel safe around foods and I was able to trust myself again. Emma is an absolute credit to the Eating Disorder team; she always showed empathy and understanding of stressors and how challenging gaining weight safely was for me. Nonetheless, I kept going through support and guidance and recognise the importance of dietetics input before therapy.

Lorna the Specialist Nurse Therapist was so welcoming, non-judgmental and created a safe space for me to go through one of the hardest, vulnerable journeys I have endured. Going through CBT for compulsive behaviors and Trauma Therapy for deep-rooted self-beliefs was the hardest part, but Lorna ensured I always felt safe, that I was going at a secure pace and I was involved with my care. This empowered me, motivated me and gave me the tools to cope with other aspects of my personal life. Lorna and Emma helped bring colour back to my world, taught me to soften and will always be part of my ongoing recovery plan. Thank you, I will be forever grateful. You are an amazing team and truly deserve recogntion.
