"UTI and Ambulatory 3E"

About: The Ulster Hospital / Emergency Department The Ulster Hospital / Urology Hub The Ulster Hospital / Ward 3E (MAU/Unscheduled Care)

(as the patient),

I had to attend A&E on advice from GP (having been discharged from Cardio IU). I had a suspected UTI and catheter inserted.

In A&E, doctor said (as an aside) this might be for a week or two, or maybe permanent!! Sat in various chairs on various drips over the weekend in A&E and Ambulatory 3E. Moving onto the third antibiotic (which was a mucin of some sort). I was told this would only be a max of one dose every 24 hours after blood tests. ........and I could do that from home by attending ever morning. I did his by taxi each day.

Some days the process (blood, lab result, doctor seeing result, and decision of more antibiotic or not) took 4 hours. I then went home again. The antibiotic was then changed again and I did not have to return until the end of the week.

Sitting around in Ambulatory 3E is not a pleasant experience; even drinks of water have to be asked for, interrupting busy staff (Mary and Adrian were fantastic).  During all of this time no one had mentioned this new catheter, its management, its future.

I was discharged by a Doctor on the Friday ( incidentally in 8 days I think I saw 9 doctors........all introduced by Christian name as -  I am one of the Doctors .......not your Doctor, or the doctor).

I had to ask for a copy of the discharge note which conveyed the info that Urology would be in touch sometime, and a catheter clinic in Bangor would also be in touch.  No other information was offered.

I contacted a UHD consultant privately the next week, and also the Bangor Catheter clinic. ..both of whom were brilliant, with advice, suggestions and future options.

I think that catheter nurses should be used during discharge.

Thank you for comments and from the outset I am sorry to hear that your experience was not as good as it should have been.

I will share all your comments with the ambulatory hub and staff working in the area.I can reassure you that staff do not mind being asked for refreshments, this should be readily available in the ambulatory hub.

I will ensure staff are all aware to provide the appropriate discharge letters and follow up appointments.

Thank you for suggesting the use of catheter nurses, unfortunately there is no one current as an in patient, however it is something that can be easily arranged as an out patient.

I hope you are continuing to improve since discharge.

Hi Ken Stables

Thanks you for taking the time to tell us of your experience when in ED. Unfortunately patients wait much longer in our department for a ward bed than we would like and it is far from ideal being in a chair for a long time. We continue to explore all options and work with our patient flow teams and senior management to improve flow from ED.

It is difficult to interpret the doctors comments as to the intention, possibly an attempt at a sense of humour that maybe failed. Staff will be reminded to be mindful of their conversations with patients.

I hope you are improving and well on the way to recovery.

Kind regards

Jenny
