"brilliant to see just how well everyone worked together"

About: Royal Blackburn Hospital / Gastroenterology

(as a service user),

I wanted to share my experience as a patient under the care of Dr Mahesh and his fantastic endoscopy team at Royal Blackburn Hospital.

Earlier this year, I was transferred from Preston while in quite a lot of pain and very unwell. It was my doctors there who contacted Dr Mahesh, and I was added to his list almost immediately. Even though I know how busy specialist teams are, Dr Mahesh came to see me first thing in the morning, spoke to me in detail about my history, and together we discussed treatment options. He explained "combined EUS and ERCP" and made sure I fully understood every step—his consent process was incredibly thorough, and I still have a copy. It’s far more detailed than I’ve come across at other hospitals.

What stood out most for me was the genuine team spirit on display. Dr Mahesh made a point of saying that it was all about teamwork with the excellent nurses and endoscopy co-ordinators. I remember Edesiri, Isaac, Lisa, Megan, Jasmine and Karen — they were all so professional, kind, and really put me at ease at a time when I was honestly quite scared. You could see the mutual respect Dr Mahesh had for his team, and it was clear they felt the same way about him.

The procedure itself went very smoothly, and I genuinely felt better within just a few hours—nothing short of a relief after how ill I’d felt. Before I was transferred back to Preston, Dr Mahesh checked in on me, and the nurses made sure I understood my test results, outcomes and plans going forward. I asked them if I was just lucky to get such care, and was told that they often deal with complex patients from all over the North West, but that Dr Mahesh is usually the one to take on the most challenging cases.

As a civil servant myself, I’m particularly aware of the value of effective, harmonious teamwork, and it was brilliant to see just how well everyone worked together at Royal Blackburn. There were no barriers—definitely no racial issues, which is so good to see in today’s NHS.

I must apologise for it taking me so many months to post this feedback, but the outstanding care I received from Dr Mahesh, Edesiri, Isaac, Lisa, Megan, Jasmine, Karen and the whole endoscopy team has really stayed with me. Thank you, all of you, for your professionalism and genuine kindness during a really tough time.
