(as a relative),

I applied for a Blue Badge on behalf of my brother who has Down Syndrome and dementia in his mid-50s.

I was initially told his mobility did not meet the criteria,  but I could re-apply on the grounds of  cognitive disability.

I was told the process would take 6 weeks. However, now at the end of November it has been referred to an Occupational Therapist.

I am really annoyed about this and constantly having to prove my brother's condition  in order to receive any help whatsoever.  .

Thank you for sharing your feedback. I’m sorry to hear that your experience applying for a Blue Badge has been challenging.

The eligibility criteria for Blue Badges are set by the Scottish Government. In addition to mobility-related criteria, there is an option to apply under the grounds of cognitive impairment if an applicant’s mobility does not meet the standard requirements for a traditional Blue Badge.

Applications submitted under the cognitive impairment category—known as the Risk in Traffic criteria—are referred to an Occupational Therapist. This ensures a thorough and robust assessment of the applicant’s needs. The Occupational Therapist will review the information provided in the application and may contact the supporting health professional or the applicant directly if further details or clarification are required.
