"Very convenient to be offered appointment on a Saturday"

About: Lerwick Health Centre

(as a service user),

I was delighted to be offered a Smear Test on a Saturday morning, this was a surprise to me, but very convenient to not have to leave work mid day to attend, especially for this type of appointment.  The nurse Marlene could not have been more helpful. I asked about a coil that I wondered if it was due to be removed at some point, it transpired that yes this was indeed the case.  So she removed that too.  It also came to light that I was due a blood pressure check up!  I did receive a letter about this but the wording of that letter advised I had a long term health condition, which is incorrect and I assumed it was an error.  Marlene explained to me exactly why I had received this letter and took my blood pressure and booked me in for a bloods appointment on the Monday. The Health Centre was quiet and not busy and Marlene gave me so much care and attention, I truly feel if I had anything I needed to talk about she would have given me the time to listen.

Mums are busy people and do not want to burden busy doctors with ‘trivial’ things and these appointments on a Saturday paired with a smear test could be a fantastic opportunity for ladies to have a space and time to share any health concerns or worries. Many thanks to the staff who are working on a Saturday to offer this service.  Really think this could be a good thing to offer even if it was once a month ie the last Saturday in the month, word of mouth would soon get around.  I know several ladies who have slight health concerns but do not want to burden the doctor and would love if they could get an appointment on a Saturday with a kind a caring Nurse Practitioner.  Unfortunately some of them are nearing the age of not needing a smear test, but a health check would be perfect.

Dear monocerosqc83,

Thank you for your kind comments and we are pleased that you have had a good experience. The Saturday clinics are part of a trial which has been well received, and we would hope that we could continue to offer this service and will be working towards this.
