"Their care went beyond what it should have"

About: South West Acute Hospital / Emergency Care and Medicine Services South West Acute Hospital / Ward 2

(as the patient),

I had two falls in my home inside a week of other. One of the falls resulted in me having to go from my bedroom to the living room on my behind and using the soles of my feet to move which resulted in carpet burns on the soles of my feet and shortly after I developed cellulitis in my legs. After a while of trying to carry on at home steadily getting worse I was finally admitted to the SWAH in Enniskillen.

At first I was on a bed in the corridor in A and E but I didn't mind as I slept most of the time and then I was admitted to Ward 2 and what can I say. From the cleaners, nursing assistants, nurses and doctors they were fantastic, their care went beyond what it should have so much so that I cried when I was leaving them to go to rehab in Omagh. Unfortunately before I got discharged from the rehab in Omagh I got e coli and sepsis infections so was sent back to the SWAH and after a few days in ward 1, I was transferred back to ward 2 and was amongst all the amazing carers again and again they nurses me back to as good as it could be to get me home.

Dear jupitergq74,

My name is Ann Marie Conlon, I am the Falls Integrated Pathway Co-ordinator within the WHSCT.

I am sorry to read about your experience, having 2 falls in a week at home, struggling to get up from the ground after the fall and sustaining carpet burns and cellulitis in your legs before you were admitted to hospital.

I was pleased to see that you received good care from the staff when you were admitted to hospital. I hope that you are making a good recovery at this time and that you have not had any more falls since returning home.

If you would like information on services available in community to support you to reduce your risk of further falls, please contact the Falls Integrated Pathway office on 02871610763 where you can leave your name and number and someone will get back to you this week.

I would encourage you to consider having a pendant alarm to be able to alert someone close to you that you need assistance in order to prevent you from having a long lie in the event of another fall incident, if you don't have one of these already?

I can provide you with information on the different pendant alarm providers, if this is something that you would find helpful at this time?

Please do not hesitate to contact our service if you have any questions. We are happy to support you at this time.

Kindest Regards,

Ann Marie Conlon

Falls Integrated Pathway Co-ordinator
