"A course of physiotherapy to help reduce hip and knee pain"

About: Bideford Hospital / Therapies

(as a service user),

The six week course was held in the gym in Bideford Hospital. The course is aimed at all those with hip and knee joint deterioration mainly due to arthritis. It was not just about exercise but also covered diet, pain medication and managing the psychological effects of pain. It was a well thought out course.

Susie and Emma, the staff running the course, provided clear instructions on using the gym equipment and also provided encouragement in a warm, compassionate and empathetic way. Susie clearly explained that having strong muscles in the legs helped to protect the joints and how carrying on at home with the exercises would benefit us all. The course is only once a week for six weeks and of course it would take much longer than that to achieve this goal. However the class was all set on the right path and having spoken to others we were all motivated to take this forward. We also were provided with some great handouts.

Dear 1509Ruby,

Thanks for taking the time to give us feedback. I'm so glad to hear you have enjoyed and benefited from the arthritis class you have been doing at Bideford. Classes are a strong element of how we support people with muscle and joint pain and as you say, a combination of exercise and education is best. I'm glad you felt it was well thought out. We usually suggest options locally for continuing with exercise beyond the period of the class and I'm glad the handouts you received were helpful. The team lead at Bideford will pass on your thanks to Susie and Emma.
