"My dealings with the Ophthalmology department"

About: Adamson Hospital / Outpatients General practices in Fife Queen Margaret Hospital / Day Surgery Queen Margaret Hospital / Ophthalmology

(as the patient),

I recently was treated for a Basal Cell Carcinoma. This episode started at the end of a recent consultation at my GP surgery My (excellent) GP picked up on something I had not mentioned, a small growth below my left eye. After a quick examination, she took several photos of the growth to send off to NHS Fife. All carried out on in a very professional and friendly manner.

I received a very rapid response from the Ophthalmology Department and was given an appointment for an initial consultation. This all occurred far quicker than I expected. This took place at the Adamson Hospital. This was carried out in a very professional and friendly manner. The Dr explained what the condition was, in a very calm and reassuring manner. This rapidly led to an appointment for a minor operation at the Queen Margaret Hospital. The service here was, again, excellent. The team were all friendly, efficient and professional. I always like to give a score on my visits to a hospital, the team at Queen Margaret get a solid 10/10

I felt on two occasions that I needed to contact the service after the operation. The first time I spoke to the on-call doctor, who was quickly able to reassure me that things were fine. On the 2nd occasion I received a return phone call within hours and was given a consultation the same day. I was again dealt with by the same doctor. A great clinician. Very friendly, professional and great at reassuring people. They get an individual score of 10/10.

Which brings me to the doctor who carried out the procedure. The star of the show. It was nice for once to have a doctor who was completely honest and inform me that something would be painful, a change from the usual this will not hurt when the doctor knows that it will hurt. Truthfulness is always the best policy. Only second visit they were in theatre. Before I could even get home, they phoned me to reassure me that all was well and that there was nothing to worry about An amazing clinician. NHS Fife is extremely lucky to have acquired this doctor's services. They get a Spinal Tap 11/10

Unfortunately there is often a fly in the ointment, in this case it was a member of staff at reception in the Adamson Hospital. I have no problem with someone expressing their opinion on political or social matters as long as it is carried out in their own time. I think that it is unacceptable to do so in the context of their place of work, especially when the employer is a public body. I found their conduct to be wholly inappropriate.

Dear The Fife MacMan

Thanks so much for sharing your experience on care opinion. I am delighted that you were dealt with in a prompt manner and received excellent care, both from the GP and the ophthalmology team. Its lovely to hear the surgeon went above and beyond phoning you straightaway to offer reassurance. We will pass this onto the rest of the team.

We will feedback the comment to Adamson Hospital about the reception team and are sorry you felt uncomfortable with the conversation you overheard.

Thanks again

Kind regards

Pamela Harley

Good Morning Pamela

Thank you for replying.

The Ophthalmology team deserved to be thanked. As a society, we are very quick to criticise nowadays, which can sometimes be justified. However, when people get things right, as they did in my case, I feel that we should let them know. It is quite likely that I will need to be treated by this department in the future and whilst not looking forward to that I know that I will be in very capable hand.

Regarding the Adamson Hospital. I think that there has been a slight misunderstanding. I did not overhear a conversation, I merely observed that a member of staff had brought their political views into a public service location. Whilst every member of staff is entitled to have their own viewpoint on any political or social issue, I believe that it is inappropriate for them to do so publicly in a public service context. I do not believe that "bringing your whole self to work" should feature in NHS practises when dealing with the public.
