"Smoking at hospital entrance"

About: Ninewells Hospital

(as the patient),

Very smoky entrance area when I arrived.

The -fresh air-zone does not exist.

On wet days I have to push through cigarette smokers to get in and out of the hospital main entrance. These appear to be mainly patients.

A smoke shed would protect other visitors, patients and children.

Good evening and thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback.

First and foremost, we apologise for any additional distress this may have caused you.

NHS Tayside prohibits smoking within our grounds and we have all appropriate signage in place across our sites to remind those entering our site of this requirement. Unfortunately this can be challenging to police across the whole site and we rely on all those accessing our site to be aware the signage provided and to adhere to the rules and regulations in place.

Our Site Management team have weekly and daily site walks in place across the Ninewells site, and we approach anyone found smoking and remind them of the need to refrain from smoking and adhere to No Smoking within NHS Grounds policy. NHS Tayside also work closely with the Local Authority Environmental Health Officers with a focus on the main entrance, including the Fresh Air Garden area, and we work with our patients at the point of admission to explore smoking dependency options, encouraging them to desist from smoking during their hospital stay.

We recently introduced a smoking complaints email address (tay.smokingcomplaints@nhs.scot), which is monitored daily, and supports members of the public and members of staff with a direct reporting tool when they encounter anyone smoking on our sites.

Regards

Louise Fraser
